A small portable computer is often referred to as a laptop or a notebook. This is a fairly modern version of the ordinary desktop PC and is very popular with consumers for a variety of reasons.
There is a lot of variation but in general a laptop will weigh between 2 and 16 pounds. It is usually available in a range of colours, materials and sizes. There are many manufacturers that make laptop computers.
A laptop is a much smaller version of a desktop PC, though for the same price, you often get more power with a desktop PC. They are powered by a main battery and it is also possible to charge the battery via a AC/DC charger linked to the mains power supply whilst also powering the laptop so you can use it at the same time. A laptop is capable of all the same functions as a desktop PC. Laptops have a keyboard built in to them and there is usually a 'touch pad' as well in place of a mouse. However, it is also possible to plug in an external keyboard and mouse if you wish. In this way the laptop can be used in a similar way to the desktop PC.
Generally within a given price range the desktop PC will be superior to the laptop. This is because for their level of usage the laptop will favour energy efficiency and compactability over absolute performance.
Studies that have been carried out have raised some health concerns with the use of laptops. It has been indicated that the level of heat that is generated from a laptop can have a negative effect on sperm count in men, when placed on the lap. Apparently, it can raise the temperature of the scrotum as much as 2.1 degrees celsius. An obvious and common solution to this for users that are concerned, is to place the laptop on a work surface to use rather than in the lap.
